Call for Community Pharmacists to Support Foundation Training Year Development
Published: 24/07/25

Our colleagues at NHS Education for Scotland (NES) are seeking community pharmacist members to join the Pharmacy Foundation Training Year (FTY) Development and Delivery Group.
This group plays a key role in shaping and refining the Foundation Training Year, ensuring it aligns with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards for Initial Education and Training. The group's work has been central to the development of an FTY programme that incorporates the full GPhC learning outcomes, leading to pharmacist independent prescriber status at the point of registration. The first cohort of trainee pharmacists under this model will begin their training this summer.
To support balanced and informed decision making, NES is looking to increase community pharmacy representation within the group. Applicants should have experience or a good understanding of the delivery of foundation training. The group meets quarterly for two hours via Microsoft Teams.
In addition to this, NES is also establishing a short life working group to review the Foundation Training Year recruitment allocation model. They are seeking community pharmacists with knowledge of the current recruitment process, modular or split programmes, and/or experiential learning delivery, to help shape the future of recruitment.
If you are interested in contributing to either group, please email your expression of interest to nes.ftypharmacy@nhs.scot
