Celebrating World Pharmacists Day in Scotland
Published: 25/09/25
Today on World Pharmacists Day we celebrate the incredible contribution that community pharmacists and their teams make to the health and wellbeing of people across Scotland. From providing expert advice and support to ensuring that communities have access to essential NHS services, pharmacy is at the heart of our communities.
This year’s World Pharmacist Day is an important reminder of the value that pharmacists bring in supporting people to live healthier lives and in reducing pressure on other parts of the NHS. Scotland’s community pharmacy network is already delivering life changing care every day and has the capacity to do even more in the years ahead.
As we mention in our recently released manifesto: Pharmacy teams are well placed to support people in areas such as weight management, to provide screening services for conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and to play a greater role in women’s health. There are also opportunities to build on the success of NHS Pharmacy First Scotland, expanding the range of treatments available and strengthening the role of prescribing within the service.
Community pharmacies could also help reduce harm by delivering consistent support for those affected by substance use and by working more closely with NHS partners to identify those most at risk. Improved digital infrastructure and better information sharing would further enhance this role and make the patient journey smoother across all parts of the health service.
On World Pharmacists Day we not only celebrate the dedication and professionalism of our colleagues but also look ahead with ambition. With the right support, community pharmacy can continue to grow its contribution and deliver even greater benefits for the people of Scotland.
Today we say thank you to every community pharmacist for the difference you make each and every day.
