Raising Awareness of the “Nip It In The Bud” Campaign

Published: 19th February 2026

Research shows people in rural areas have more advanced cancer when they are diagnosed and are 5% less likely to survive it than people living in urban areas. National charity The Farming Community Network (FCN) is working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to raise awareness in farming and rural communities of the risks, signs and symptoms of cancer and to encourage early detection.

The ‘Nip it in the Bud’ campaign recognizes that people in farming and rural communities may be less likely to receive an early cancer diagnosis for a variety of reasons including  geographical isolation, self employment / business factors, embarrassment and a sense of aches and pains being ‘part of the job’, as well as a lack of digital connectivity all being contributory factors.

The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a voluntary organisation and charity that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in farming and rural communities and provide support at times of difficulty and change.  Together with MacMillan Cancer Support they have provided many resources to help support rural communities affected by cancer and these can be accessed via the link below.

Community Pharmacies can help support the campaign by downloading the resource pack, displaying posters and leaflets, supporting fundraising efforts / social media , and signposting those affected to the website which includes support, advice and helpline information.

Early detection of cancer is one of the key CPS Manifesto aims, and Community Pharmacy can play a vital role in reducing the number of late-stage presentations of cancer in line with Scotland’s 10-year cancer strategy.
