Scottish Cancer Conference 2025

Published:13/11/25

On Monday this week, our Policy & Development Officer Gordon attended the Scottish Cancer Conference at the University of Strathclyde Technology & Innovation Centre.

Jackie Bailliie MSP and Miles Briggs MSP, co-convened the Conference which included a welcome message from Ian Walker of Cancer Research UK, who identified the need to fund and deliver Scotland’s 10 year Cancer Strategy.  CRUK emphasised the need for a targeted national lung screening service and for Scotland to become a hub for world-leading research.

A keynote speech from Ole Alexander Opdalshei on “Equity, Innovation and Collaboration – Norway’s Vision for Cancer Control”, highlighted some key similarities and differences between Cancer Care in Scotland and Norway given our similar population and rural communities.  Three in every four people diagnosed with cancer in Norway survive beyond the 5-year marker, but their healthcare system also faces similar challenges to Scotland.  Collaborative working, early detection and prevention of Cancer remain key priorities in their 10-year Cancer Plan.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Neil Gray MSP gave an address on behalf of Scottish Government, and the day concluded with an emotional and inspiring patient panel session where four patients shared their cancer journeys to a hushed auditorium.

With the Scottish Parliament elections taking place in May 2026, the conference was identified as a space for collective ambition to ensure cancer remains a top priority for the next Scottish Government.
