Pharmacy Intervention Leads to Timely Lyme Disease Treatment

Published: 25/07/25

A community pharmacy consultation has played a vital role in the early detection and treatment of a suspected case of Lyme disease, thanks to the vigilance of an Independent Prescribing (IP) Pharmacist and the power of public health awareness.

A woman visited her local pharmacy to speak with IP Pharmacist Philippa after being bitten by a tick. During the consultation, Philippa observed a rash that, while not a textbook case of erythema migrans, appeared hot and swollen. The patient also reported a range of concerning symptoms, including flu-like illness, persistent fever, migraine-type headaches, and joint and muscle pain.

Recognising the severity and combination of symptoms, Philippa advised the patient to seek same-day assessment from their GP. The patient returned to the pharmacy later that day with a prescription for azithromycin, expressing deep gratitude for the pharmacist's swift and compassionate intervention. Crucially, the patient revealed that it was the pharmacy’s Lyme disease awareness display, and an information leaflet from Lyme Disease UK, that prompted them to seek help in the first place. Without this in-store health promotion, they said, they likely would not have taken action.

This case highlights the invaluable role of community pharmacy teams in early detection, patient education, and timely referral especially when supported by well-placed public health resources. It also reinforces the importance of continued investment in pharmacy-led health promotion campaigns.

Community Pharmacy Scotland extends its thanks to Philippa and the wider pharmacy team for their outstanding work, and to Lyme Disease UK for their excellent educational materials that helped make this intervention possible.
