AWAKE Check Tool
Published: 14th September 2026
Our colleagues at the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services have spent some time with us to highlight and explain their participation in AWAKE Check study and tool.
This tool is a free, clinically validated risk assessment for symptoms of insomnia and sleep apnoea which your patients may come across or be referred to use. The tool collects data over time to inform the study, which aims to inform future public health strategies.
You can find out more about the tool and access some sleep-related CPD at this link, whether that is to be prepared to support patients who have used it already or to suggest it to those who are struggling with their sleep. It produces a report of the patient's results for them to support conversations with health professionals, but users should note that it is not a diagnostic tool. As always, check in with your employer or superintendent before using in practice or displaying the QR code posters.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with the AWAKE check team directly at start@awakecheck.co.uk.

It is a free online screening tool that takes about five minutes and gives someone an indication of their possible risk of both sleep apnoea and insomnia. It combines two validated questionnaires: the STOP-Bang for sleep apnoea risk and the Insomnia Severity Index. If the person opts to receive their results by email, there is an optional two-minute follow-up questionnaire, the Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire 10. It can be reached online or via QR code in pharmacies, and is intended to support conversations between the public and professionals and help guide safe signposting to appropriate care. awakecheck bspss

The study is organised and coordinated by the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services, a UK-registered charity based in Lincoln. It aims to estimate the proportion of UK adults at risk of insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea and comorbid insomnia and sleep apnoea, and to raise awareness of sleep health through community pharmacies, social media and mass media. The scale of the gap is the driver: around 1 in 4 UK adults may have sleep apnoea, yet an estimated 80% of people go undiagnosed. It is an independent, unfunded research project with no commercial sponsorship or industry ties, aside from an unconditional grant from SEFAM Medical UK Ltd towards prize money. It is registered as ISRCTN16640471. AWAKE Check: A UK study assessing sleep disorder risk in ... +3

The survey is anonymous and non-invasive, no treatment is given, and participants can withdraw at any point by choosing not to submit. Responses are collected via Jotform on EU servers, and providing an email address for follow-up is entirely optional. Data with emails removed is analysed by the research team and then stored securely in the UK, encrypted, offline and GDPR-compliant. isrctn awakecheck
