Help your patients to get Maximum Benefit from their Inhalers

What? Why? Children in Hospital (WWCIH) is a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) founded in 2015 by Dr Marit Boot, with the vision of preparing parents, carers and children for a positive hospital experience.

Over the course of her career, Marit has seen patients struggle to take in information when they are in stressful and emotional states prior to hospital procedures. These emotions are very natural, and are often due to fear of the unknown.

In response to this, Marit set up WWCIH to offer both children and adults visual information in the form of informative videos to help them before and after hospital and community appointments – by showing precisely what happens during a procedure. The videos are freely available online and are designed to be a great resource for all.

In 2019 the charity launched two new videos; Inhalers for children and Inhalers for elderly patients both funded by the Health Literacy team, Scottish Government and developed in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

In my experience as a community pharmacist, I’ve found these particular videos are really helpful, as patients often struggle to use their inhalers correctly. The videos provide information in a clear and easy to follow manner, which helps people to use them properly, making sure they get the care they need.

You may have patients who would benefit from being able to watch a video showing them how to use various inhalers and spacers. The videos can be found by following these links www.wwcih.org.uk/inhaler and www.wwcih.org.uk/inhaler-elderly.

For more information, including accessing free leaflets to give to patients, please see WWCIH’s website www.wwcih.org.uk or email info@wwcih.org.uk.
